Unai Emery outlines Arsenal aims in first press conference

Unai Emery outlines Arsenal aims in first press conference

Unai Emery was unveiled as the new head coach of Arsenal on Wednesday and the Spanish coach spoke to the media at the Emirates Stadium soon after the news was official.

He also previously coached at Spartak Moscow, lasting 26 games in the 2012-13 season before being sacked, and before that spent four years leading Valencia in his first top-flight appointment.

Emery moved to Sevilla where he won three consecutive Europa League trophies in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Arsenal, though, are sure they have a "serial victor".

"Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly", said chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

"His hard-working, passionate approach and his sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward".

He has also failed to defeat Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho in five meetings, recording just one draw.

Tactically Emery is quite different to the style Wenger created at Arsenal and there can be some clear, and healthy, progression while still sticking with the possession-based style. "I know they already are, but I want them to continue to be".

Significantly, Emery has flourished within a structure similar to the one now in place at Arsenal, who lean heavily on head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and head of football operations Raul Sanllehi, both recruited last November. At the age of 48 he has worked at huge clubs with big expectations and has delivered at each, apart from PSG being chucked out of the Champions League last 16 to Barcelona and Real Madrid in the last two seasons. "This is a big project and I am proud to be here and to work after Arsene Wenger".

The Arsenal board will be hopeful that Emery can guide the club back into the Champions League qualification mix next season, after the Gunners missed out once more after finishing a distant 6th in the Premier League.

Emery left PSG earlier this month after two years, a effect of the failure to carry the dominance on the domestic stage into the Champions League.

UNFP Manager of the Year: 2017-18.
