Trump says China trade deal is 'too hard to get done'

Trump says China trade deal is 'too hard to get done'

He later added, "they're a start".

For example, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the United States would hold off on imposing tariffs on China.

Washington and Beijing have threatened to impose tens of billions of dollars' worth of tariffs on each other's exports in recent months. The Chinese have promised counter-tariffs targeting products from states politically important to Trump, particularly in the Midwest Farm Belt - the source of intense pressure on the president to resolve the dispute.

Sen. Chris Murphy Wednesday accused President Donald Trump of "simply making thing up" with his claims that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had infiltrated his campaign in order to "create a cloud around very bad news for him".

ZTE was fined $1.2 billion in March 2017, but last month Washington banned the sale of crucial USA components to the company after finding it had lied multiple times and failed to take actions against employees responsible for sanctions violations on Iran and North Korea. Chinese government officials however are undertaking negotiations on behalf of ZTE and the company, which doesn't have much influence in the process, will have to accept the terms of any settlement reached between Beijing and Washington.

"The deal will have little impact on the bilateral deficit with China and a minimal impact on the overall deficit". But U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said hours later the tariffs were still on the table.

In Tokyo, trade minister Hiroshige Seko said Japan, which accounts for about 40% of USA vehicle imports, will continue to remind United States officials that any trade measures must conform to the rules of the World Trade Organisation.

Negotiators from the two nations announced last Saturday they created a framework for addressing trade imbalances, with China agreeing to purchase more American-made goods.

Still, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said China had agreed to dramatically increase purchases of USA farm and energy products.

Critics of the deal have also complained that it is silent on broader economic issues important to the USA, including Chinese acquisition of American technology; the country's plans to subsidise growth of advanced domestic industries such as artificial intelligence and clean energy; and United States companies' access to China's markets.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross was expected to visit China next week to help finalise an agreement.

On the eve of talks last week with a Chinese trade envoy, Trump barged into the ZTE case by tweeting that he was working with President Xi Jinping to put ZTE "back in business, fast" and save tens of thousands of Chinese jobs. It was clear after the meeting that ZTE still faces a real threat of enforcement action for significant sanctions violations.

"Trump caving in to Wall Street on China trade in general and ZTE in specific at this pivotal moment when the US capacity to change the situation is time-limited is so threatening to our country's future that even the Democratic strategists celebrating how Trump's betrayal of working-class voters will ruin his reelection chances are quietly worrying about the long-term damage this move will cause".

Republican Senator Marco Rubio said he thought China had gotten the upper hand in recent negotiations on trade and North Korea denuclearization.

Trump expressed doubt on Tuesday that his planned June 12 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would happen, telling reporters there's a "very substantial chance" it won't.

He pointedly did not mention Navarro, with whom he quarrelled during a trade mission to Beijing earlier this month.
