Arizona Women's Golf Wins the 2018 National Championship

Arizona Women's Golf Wins the 2018 National Championship

Filipina golfer Bianca Pagdanganan helped rejuvenate the Wildcats from match-play hopefuls into championship contenders.

Arizona upset No. 1 seeded UCLA, 3-2 in the quarterfinals before facing Stanford in the semis.

The Women's Golf Coaches Association announced Wednesday before the start of the match that Stephenson won the Golfstat Cup, given to the collegiate player with the lowest stroke average. Moresco and Abe still had enough holes to provide the winning match if either had been needed.

Abe sent the day's final match into a playoff after squaring her match with Moore on No. 18. That gave her additional determination when it shifted to team play.

The victory earned Arizona a spot in the Marathon Classic to be played on July 12-15 at the Highland Meadows Golf Club in Ohio.

Moore would win the 17th, and headed to the 18th with a stroke lead, hoping to secure the schools' third championship. She had three birdies in five-hole stretch on the back, almost making her second hole-in-one of the year at the par-3, 180-yard 16th.

"I'll make the best of it either way, " she said.

Another first-team All-American, Cheyenne Knight, was next to strike for the Crimson Tide, as she beat Bianca Pagdanganan 4&2 to put 'Bama one match away from the national championship. Luckily, Abe's second shot would land in the sand trap just in front of the green. Match-play victories followed against UCLA, the top seed, and Stanford, a team that has done better in this format year after year than any other program.

"For us it's just kind of the culmination of a lot of hard work, a lot of really good play". "Ever since that putt, it helped pump my teammates up and I think that is what helped get us here", she said.

"I kind of screwed up on 17 and then came to 18 and I knew I was going to have to make a birdie or eagle because Hayley had been outdriving me all day", Abe said. Arizona's path to this national title has been unlikely, starting all the way back in the fall. But we had a chance at the end, and you have got to get a contribution from everybody. "With the talent of these five young women I knew anything was possible".

All three finished in the top 10 during the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships. "We played solid this entire spring and we didn't play our best, so in my gut I still felt we had something out there".

The good vibes and positive signs for Clemson at this week's host venue for the NCAA Men's Golf Championship begin before the team even sets foot onto the course.
