Case of Nipah Virus suspected after sudden death of bats

Case of Nipah Virus suspected after sudden death of bats

The natural host of the virus is fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, Pteropus genus.

Nipah has killed more than 260 people in Malaysia, Bangladesh and India since 1998 and has a mortality rate of almost 70 percent, according to the World Health Organization. "We are hopeful we can put a stop to the outbreak".

The Bihar government issued Nipah virus alert on Saturday, asking people to take precautions.

The Kozhikode Medical College has 136 patients while nearby Malappuram district has 24 who are under observation.

Two other patients were in isolation in neighbouring Karnataka state after developing symptoms similar to Nipah upon returning from Kerala.

Amidst the news of the Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, more than 18 dead bats were discovered on Wednesday in the premises of a government school in Himachal Pradesh's Nahan, triggering a panic among locals.

She urged people not to destroy fruit bat colonies, believed to be the cause of the animals coming into contact with humans.

India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said Tuesday that public health crews found numerous bats in a water well that had been used by three family members who were among the victims. Lini's husband, Sajeesh, who works in Bahrain, rushed to Perambra on hearing about her condition, but by then it was nearly too late. I may not be able to see you again. "Sorry", Puthusheri wrote, according to the Associated Press. Sorry. Take care of our children properly... Some 50 people died in the first two outbreaks. According to World Health Organization, human infections range from asymptomatic infection, acute respiratory infection (mild, severe), and fatal encephalitis.

Who are the major carriers of the virus? Experts say that NiV is an airborne transmission pathogen and can affect those who come in direct contact with contaminated bodies.

To discuss issues relating to outbreak of the virus, an all-party meeting has also been called at the Kozhikode collectorate tomorrow in which representatives of political parties, MPs and MLAs will participate. "If the situation persists, we may have to ask our agencies to do a formal assessment of whether this will hurt India's export potential", the Business Standard quoted a commerce minister official as saying. Noted author and rationalist MN Karassery also joined in, tweeting to the Kerala Chief Minister, to institute an award for the most service-minded female nurse, in honour of Lini. The main treatment for those infected is "intensive supportive care", according to the United Nations health body.
