Subtropical Storm Alberto Heads Toward Gulf Coast

Subtropical Storm Alberto was "meandering over the northwestern Caribbean Sea" Friday afternoon, causing unsafe surf and rip current conditions on the Yucatan and the west coast of Cuba, according to the the center's website. Some areas may get more, others less.

Highs Sunday are expected to range from the low to mid 70s across the north to the low to mid 80s here in the Lehigh Valley and across southeastern Pa., southern New Jersey and the Delmarva peninsula.

In Central Texas, there's a slight chance of showers overnight and Saturday, but otherwise the sky should be sunny and high temperatures should be in the mid-90s.

Follow WTXL First Alert on Social Media. The main threat for Florida is heavy rainfall, tornadoes and rip currents, the National Hurricane Center said.

Forecast maps show rainfall amounts of 2 to 7 inches will be common across the Southeast, as far north as the Carolinas and as far west as Louisiana.

A FLOOD WATCH will take effect Saturday afternoon and extend through Sunday.

Heavy rain will likely begin to affect the central Gulf Coast region and the southeastern US later this weekend and continue into early next week.

The WGNO weather team will continue to monitor Alberto as it continues to churn into the Gulf of Mexico and will bring you the latest updates on-air and online.

Alberto will likely make it number one.

According to the National Hurricane Center, tropical storm watches are now in affect for parts of Mexico and Cuba. The highest winds are also now away from the center. The tropical storm may bring some rain to our area, but very minimal. So stay tuned for potentially new Flash Flood Watches and Warnings throughout the weekend. Seas will build up to 3 feet Saturday night and peak on Sunday at up to 10 feet in the Gulf of Mexico.

The system will also create hazardous conditions along the coast. However it weakened before making landfall and had winds around 45 miles per hour at that time.

There remains a lot of uncertainty on the track and intensity of the storm as it lifts to the north.
