Alan Bean (1932 - 2018), Apollo astronaut walked on the Moon

Alan Bean (1932 - 2018), Apollo astronaut walked on the Moon

The Apollo astronaut and the fourth man to walk on the moon, Alan Bean has died at age 86.

They included a re-creation of Armstrong securing an American flag in the lunar dust; Mr. Bean standing with Conrad on the moon, looking toward Earth; Eugene A. Cernan riding in a lunar rover during the Apollo 17 mission, and the Earth rising above the moon.

His family said he had fallen ill two weeks ago in IN and died peacefully at a hospital in Houston. Six years later, he piloted the lunar module for the Apollo 12 mission and followed Pete Conrad onto the surface of the moon.

Bean became an accomplished artist after his retirement in 1981, painting scene from his space explorations.

In a statement, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine described Mr Bean as a "boundary pusher".

Mr Bean's death means that only four of the 12 Apollo moonwalkers are still alive - Buzz Aldrin, Dave Scott, Charlie Duke and Harrison Schmitt.

Bean's paintings depict the moon, astronauts, modules and other elements of America's missions into space.

Bean was born on March 15, 1932, in Wheeler, Texas, and grew up in Fort Worth.

Working from his home in Houston, Mr. Bean strove for accuracy in presenting the astronauts' gear and the prevailing light, but his paintings often conveyed a sense of what it was like to work on the moon rather than replicating an exact moment.

He was among the elite group NASA chose for its third group of astronauts in 1963, having served as a test pilot in the US Navy.

"Alan and I have been best friends for 55 years - ever since the day we became astronauts", said Walt Cunningham, who flew on Apollo 7.

He said: "I think a lot of it just had to do with it looked exciting".

"He was a one-of-a-kind combination of technical achievement as an astronaut and artistic achievement as a painter", said Massimino, who flew on two space shuttle missions.

Many of Mr. Bean's fellow astronauts were evidently taken aback by his choosing the art world over private business.

US astronaut Karen Nyberg called Bean a kind, gracious and humble man and a true role model. "Fair winds and following seas, Captain", Kelly tweeted. "I feel fortunate to have met him". "Alan and I never missed a month where we did not have a cheeseburger". "He was the love of my life and I miss him dearly", said Leslie Bean, Bean's wife of 40 years, in a statement.

In 1994 Bean told The New York Times the otherworldly perspectives he got in space inspired him to devote the latter half of his life to art, to the surprise of many of his colleagues.
