Pilot Whale With 80 Plastic Bags In Stomach Dies In Thailand

Pilot Whale With 80 Plastic Bags In Stomach Dies In Thailand

About 80 pieces of plastic weighing 17 pounds were found inside a whale in Thailand, NBC reported.

A whale that died in waters in southern Thailand this week had swallowed 80 plastic bags.

In all, more than 17lb of plastic was pulled from inside the whale, indicating how feeding would have become impossible as it languished in a canal on the Thai-Malaysian border.

A team of veterinarians and volunteers spent about five days trying to treat the sick short-fin pilot whale.

The small male pilot whale had been discovered ailing and unable to swim in the Na Thap Canal last Monday.

Thailand is a major user of plastic bags and its government last month announced it was considering a levy on them.

"We found a lot of plastic bags in the stomach, I think around 85 plastic bags", explained Dr Watchara Sakornwimon.

A pilot whale that died after ingesting rubbish has highlighted Thailand's losing battle against plastic, said conservationists who called for urgent measures to cut back on pollution that also worsens urban flooding.

A whale has died in southern Thailand after swallowing more than 80 plastic bags, marine experts said.

Globally, some eight million tonnes of plastic waste is dumped into the ocean every year, killing marine life and entering the human food chain, the United Nations Environment Programme said in December.

Thais use huge numbers of plastic bags and authorities have launched campaigns to try to encourage people to use fewer and to introduce reusable bags.

The country is one of the world's largest consumers of plastic bags.
