Facebook pulls 'Trending' to try new approaches to news

Facebook pulls 'Trending' to try new approaches to news

It was also available on the Facebook app.

In announcing its removal, Alex Hardiman, head of news products at Facebook, said that through research, they learned that people found the product to be less and less useful over time.

According to Facebook, "We introduced Trending in 2014 as a way to help people discover news topics that were popular across the Facebook community".

Removing the section comes as Facebook continues to grapple with questions of liberal bias, likely a remnant of the 2016 Trending controversy.

While it may be true that Trending wasn't used very much, the feature also opened Facebook to attack from critics who complained it was jury-rigging the news diet of its massive user base.

Facebook said it is working with 80 publishers in Australia, Europe, India, and the Americas on a "Breaking News" label to adorn posts in News Feed.

Facebook said "Trending" will be removed next week.

It fit nicely into chief executive Mark Zuckerberg's pledge just a year earlier to make Facebook a "personal newspaper" for users.

The Facebook logo is seen at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York's Times Square. To clear the way, the company added that it will remove the section from the website next week. Facebook hasn't announced what will replace the section but acknowledged that the way users access news is changing and the new content will reflect that. It will let outlets add a red label to differentiate their posts from other text and signal accurate, breaking news.

Of course, Facebook will still offer you access to news, including trending and breaking news.

The Associated Press This image provided by Facebook shows a new feature Facebook is testing out.

The company is also funding news videos, created exclusively for Facebook by outside publishers it would not yet name.

In place of the fated feature, Facebook says it's now developing better ways to share news with its more than 2.1 billion users.

A third feature will soon launch. Presumably Facebook is devoting considerably more resources to the new feature, but that isn't likely to stop certain news sites and publishers from complaining if their articles aren't highlighted and those from other news sites are.
