Is Google finally killing Android tablets in favor of Chrome devices?

Is Google finally killing Android tablets in favor of Chrome devices?

Not since the Pixel C has Google shown any intense interest in tablets, but now nearly three years after it was announced Google has apparently given up any pretense of caring about tablets, removing the category from the Android.com website.

That speculation yesterday gained further traction when the tablet section on the Google Store website suddenly disappeared. The declining interest in Android tablets has been highlighted in a report by Digitimes Research which claimed that 33 million tablets were shipped in the first quarter of 2018. The tablets that Google mentions on the page are also outdated. Naturally, this development prompted the tech press to declare Android tablets dead. If Google is to be asked, tablets are pretty much dead in the water.

As you know, in recent years the demand for tablet PC has become considerably less than, for example, 5 years ago.

Google experience a glitch in the matrix over the weekend where the last traces of Android's tablet existence vanished without a trace. Google focused more on smartphone features with its last few versions of Android, while tablets got only a few improvements. The gone section provided some tablet-specific apps along with showcasing the devices like Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, Sony Xperia Z4, and Nvidia Shield Tablet K1. So the disenchantment with Android tablets began. Chrome OS also starts to make its way to tablets. With its support for Android apps and upcoming support for Linux virtual machines, Chrome OS is shaping up to be more than what Android on tablets has ever been: an all-in-one productivity platform.

The overall Android tablet market has been quite underwhelming, in fact, with very few companies actually doing anything innovative in the sector. But if you think Google has decided that "not worth powder and shot", then we hasten to reassure you: Google still believes in a bright future for tablet PCs, but with one important change - they will not be on the OS Android.
