How to stream NASA’s mysterious Mars announcement today

NASA's Curiosity rover has found new evidence preserved in rocks on Mars that suggests the planet could have supported ancient life, as well as new evidence in the Martian atmosphere that relates to the search for current life on the Red Planet.

The Mars 2020 rover will scan the Red Planet for signs of ancient life by studying terrain that once consisted of flowing rivers and lakes more than 3.5 billion years ago.

Detecting this organic molecule in the atmosphere, combined with the finding of organic compounds in the soil, has strong implications about potential life on Mars in its past. Organic molecules pop up frequently in space, but it's neat that Mars had life's building blocks during a time when many think it was more habitable.

"Whether it holds a record of ancient life, was food for life, or has existed in the absence of life, organic matter in Martian materials holds chemical clues to planetary conditions and processes".

Spikes and plumes of methane in Mars's thin atmosphere have been detected by several missions over more than two decades, but they have been frustrating to study, said Christopher Webster, who led the methane study. Curiosity has had a somewhat rough go of things over the past few months, breaking its drilling mechanism and having to totally relearn how to use its tool in a new way so that it can continue to pierce Martian rocks. What the study has done, though, is to propel the search for life on Mars higher up the list of worldwide space exploration priorities - giving space agencies ammunition to argue for a coordinated programme of missions to explore the Red Planet. That's because the surface of Mars is constantly bombarded with radiation that can break down organic compounds.

"We don't know", Eigenbrode says.

The full findings will also appear in the 8 June edition of the journal Science.

NASA now operates three orbiters and two surface rovers at Mars with a new lander - InSight - on the way.

These chemicals might not mean a great deal to most of us, but to areologists (that's Martian geologists) it's an indication that the organic chemistry in Martian mudstone is extremely similar to our own. "And what it does, it gives us a key to unlocking the mysteries associated with Mars methane because now we have something to test our models and our understanding against".

Referring to the findings regarding organic compounds and methane, Webster said, "They hint at an earlier time on Mars when water was present and the existence of primitive life forms was possible".

In addition to finding organic molecules in the rocks in Gale Crater, rover scientists are reporting another intriguing finding.

Over five years, Curiosity has used its Tunable Laser Spectrometer to measure methane in the atmosphere at the Gale crater. They are fairly certain that it comes from melting water-based crystals, called clathrates, buried just below the planet's surface.

That could even be happening beneath the surface now, the researchers said. But they could also be the result of abiotic chemical reactions on the surface of the planet.

"That would be exciting because if that is done within two years, NASA can send a mission specifically to that place", he said.

But National Aeronautics and Space Administration scientists emphasized there could be nonbiological explanations for both discoveries made by the Curiosity rover at a site called Gale crater, leaving the issue of Martian life a tantalizing but unanswered question.
