Plastic pollution is a grave issue, stress experts

Plastic pollution is a grave issue, stress experts

For India, World Environment Day 2018 is not a "symbolic" celebration, but a mission, Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan today said. If you do get a plastic item, reuse it as many times as you can and then recycle it.

The United Nations warns that 360 million tonnes of plastic is produced each year, and levels are set to nearly double to 619 million tonnes by 2030, with cigarette butts, drinks bottles and caps and food wrappers the most common single-use plastics.

Badminton star Saina Nehwal posted: "The movement to beat plastic pollution is growing and I urge you to http://join.You can#BeatPlasticPollution by sharing a video or photo on this #WorldEnvironmentDay.I would like to challenge my friends to spread this initiative @parupallik @PRANNOYHSPRI @GuruSaiDutt1". Plastic isn't the problem.

Speaking of plastic waste alone, approximately 900,000 tonnes of PET - used to make soft drink bottles, furniture, carpet, paneling, etc. - was produced in India in 2015-16, as reported by the National Chemical Laboratory.

But there needs to be broader work with businesses to extend the responsibility of producers for their waste, and to create incentives for a more sustainable approach to plastic production and consumption. But not much seems to have been learnt from that experience with SWDs in many parts of the city still used as a dumping ground for plastic and other waste of industries, malls and homes.

The celebration of World Environment Day started in 1974 with the objective of raising awareness, supporting action and driving change.

"Beat Plastic Pollution" is this year's World Environment Day theme.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that there would be more plastic than fish by 2050 if the present trends continue. It hardly happens that we do not encounter plastic in some or the other form. Later this week at the G7 Summit, we will bring world leaders together to discuss how we can reduce plastic pollution, tackle climate change, and improve the health of the world's oceans.

"Plastic pollution is a huge issue everywhere", U.N. Environment chief Erik Solheim told The Associated Press in an interview.

"About100,000 marine animals are killed by plastics and 83 per cent of tap water are found to contain plastic particles".

Dr Molewa has reiterated sentiment expressed during the Department's Budget Vote speech last month, that South Africa was committed to minimizing plastic pollution and that the DEA is looking at introducing a raft of measures to curb plastic pollution.
