G7 leaders vow rapid response to Russia's hostile interference

G7 leaders vow rapid response to Russia's hostile interference

U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were all jokes and smiles for the media as they met at the Group of Seven leaders summit in Quebec on Friday, but neither budged on the serious trade dispute between them.

The late arrival at a session, where the G7 leaders were discussing gender equality and women's empowerment sparked concerns that the United States president might not participate at all in Saturday's meetings.

Donald Trump says, "The United States has had a very big trade deficit for many years with the European Union, and we are working it out".

"I've been firm, I've been clear, but I don't think descending into insults is right for the way Canada engages with the world", the prime minister said.

The two-day summit in Canada has been marred by a tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with USA trading partners furious over Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda.

He said the current system of global trade has badly damaged US interests while giving an advantage to others.

"After calling out Trudeau and Macron before the summit, he took a different approach on Saturday, "[congratulating] he leaders of other countries for crazily being able to make these trade deals that were so good for their countries and bad for the United States" and chastising his predecessors for allowing the U.S.to be taken advantage of.

He arrived to the meeting late and left early, holding a solo news conference Saturday morning where he gave the trade ultimatum and said the size of the USA economy means other nations cant win a trade war.

Among other things, Barro wrote, Russia was kicked out of the alliance under the Obama presidency and Trump enjoys undoing Obama's actions; other G7 leaders have a few bones to pick with Trump that Russian President Vladimir Putin may not; Putin and other autocrats flatter Trump more than democratically elected leaders do; and with Putin at the table, it would take some of the heat off Trump.

In footage of the pair, Trump said of Macron: "Arm wrestling, he would be very, very tough".

But a grinning Trump answered for him: "He's happy", he cracked. To United States, frankly, it would be a good thing but I'm not looking to do that.

Trump said he pushed for the elimination of trade barriers, including subsidies and tariffs, at the G-7 meeting.

The suspension was supported by the other members of the group, including the US, Canada, Japan and four European nations.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not wait for the USA president to kick off the meeting in La Malbaie, Quebec.

The June 2018 G-7 Summit at Charlevoix, Quebec, may go down as the place and time when Donald Trump, roughly five hundred days into his presidency, put his stamp on US foreign policy, just prior to his encounter with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

Although Trump engaged in a Twitter spat with French President Emmanuel Macron and Trudeau in the hours prior to the start of the summit, the tensions cooled once all the leaders came face-to-face for talks on Friday.

"They do so much more business with us than we do with them ... the numbers are so astronomically against them - we win that war a thousand times out of a thousand".

Mr Trump left the summit earlier than planned on Saturday to fly to Singapore to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which he described as a "mission of peace".

Trudeau said he and Trump have disagreed over Trump's call for Canada to open up its supply management system, which protects dairy, poultry and eggs farmers, during the hard ongoing renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Trump has denied the hotel, which opened during the Klondike Gold Rush, was ever operated as a brothel.
