Kentucky Fried What? KFC will test a vegetarian alternative in UK

KFC's announcement provoked mixed reactions on Twitter, with one user declaring that "no vegetarian would set foot in a fried chicken chain".

Almost four decades after the death of the man who founded the Kentucky Fried Chicken fast-food chain, KFC is devising a fake meat version with the colonel's tightly held original recipe of 11 herbs and spices. "That's why we're looking into vegetarian options that would offer the great taste of KFC to new and existing customers who are changing their dining habits".

The chain announces a plan to test the new recipe to its customers within this year.

If successful, KFC is touted to be the very first among the big fast-food chains to offer faux chicken meat on its menu.

KFC has also promised to use the same 11 herbs and spice mix in the new item that is used in its regular fried chicken variety.

"It's a tricky challenge, because our fans absolutely love our Original Recipe chicken, and we won't be changing the Colonel's secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices".

Victoria Robertson, a nutritionist, and head of food innovation of KFC UK and Ireland explained that KFC recognized how people are becoming more passionate about healthy eating habits.

Meanwhile, KFC's USA team has indicated to Foodbeast that the vegetarian option won't be introduced in the country and there are "no plans related to the U.K.'s test at this time". Public Health England issued guidelines in March with the aim of reducing the calorie count of some popular foods by 20 percent by 2024.

They're not just winging it: The US fast food chain said the move is in line with its United Kingdom commitment to reduce calories per serving by 20% by 2025.

"We know any new menu and recipe changes will have to be just as tasty as today", Robertson told the Mirror. They will also introduce multiple meals that are under 600 calories by 2020.
