#CanadianGP triumph means a lot, says Vettel in his 50th F1 win

#CanadianGP triumph means a lot, says Vettel in his 50th F1 win

This is Vettel's second victory in Canada, having won his first for Red Bull in 2013, and marks his 50th career victory - only Michael Schumacher, Hamilton and Alain Prost have scored more.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who clocked the fastest lap at the end, managed to resist a late charge from Hamilton in the closing laps and retain fourth place ahead of the Englishman who extended his record points-scoring run to 32 races.

Bottas's main challenge from behind came at the start when a fast-starting Max Verstappen pulled alongside into Turn 1, but Bottas held onto the inside line for Turn 2 and forced the Red Bull driver to back out. Vettel got a superb start after the resumption and Bottas never looked like making up ground - especially after a slight error with around a dozen laps to go which effectively ensured the German could cruise home.

Harlow had been at the race as a guest of Formula One and is a friend of Lewis Hamilton.

"Pole position is always important", said Vettel. "Forty years after Gilles won his Grand Prix here, it's nice to show Ferrari is still alive. I'm just happy. It was a great grand prix to win".

His engine was six races old but Hamilton would have expected better.

"I've been watching Formula One for a long time and we're going to see our first Formula One race", said Glynn Cornwall, a fan from Toronto who made the trek with his son and a friend.

But Bottas and Hamilton may have been set back by the team's inability to get an updated engine ready in time for the race, while Ferrari and Red Bull both had new parts.

"This is why this year's championship is going to be decided by the one who makes the fewest mistakes, brings the best development onto the power unit of the engine on every single weekend".

"The team has been extremely strong in the past at keeping reliability on a high level so that is not a part that worries me, it is more we have seen today a Ferrari that is the stronger vehicle - strong in qualifying, strong in race and at no time we had a chance to fight for the win". He and Ferrari executed their race to perfection, took the lead in the title race and have left Hamilton and Mercedes with much to consider before racing resumes in France in a fortnight.

It was Ferrari's first win in Canada since 2004 and came from their first pole there in 17 years.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was sixth, and said it had been a boring race, with Renault's Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz seventh and eighth.

It was the 300th F1 race for two-time champion Fernando Alonso of McLaren, good for fourth all-time.
