CBS Deletes Robert De Niro’s ‘Offensive Language’ From Tony Awards Live Telecast

CBS Deletes Robert De Niro’s ‘Offensive Language’ From Tony Awards Live Telecast

Another work by a major American playwright - Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women" - also held a share of the spotlight as two of its three stars, Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf, were honored as best lead actress and best featured actress in a play. Then Ming-Na Wen presented the education award to Melody Herzfeld, the drama teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who kept her students safe during the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The profanity was bleeped out in the live broadcast, but tweets from attendees and reporters confirmed De Niro's remarks.

The victor for best featured actress in a musical was Lindsay Mendez for her work in the revival of "Carousel". She told the crowd how early in her career, she'd been encouraged to change her last name to Matthews to better her chances of playing non-minority roles.

"Your biggest obstacle", said Stachel of "The Band's Visit", addressing young artists all across the nation, "may turn out to be your objective".

DeNiro has been one of Trump's harshest critics in the entertainment industry.

The two-part spectacle Harry Potter and the Cursed Child had captured six, including best play, book, lighting, sound design, orchestrations and director John Tiffany, who asked the crowd to sing Happy Birthday to his boyfriend. He also looked touched, but mostly that he wanted to use a little of that Harry Potter magic to disappear. "Both of my parents are here tonight - and I have avoided so many events with them because for so many years of my life, I pretended that I was not a Middle Eastern person", he said in a moving and highly personal acceptance speech at the Tony Awards on Sunday night.

The bill for the evening includes performances from the casts of the 2018 Tony Award-nominated shows The Band's Visit, Carousel, Frozen, Mean Girls, My Fair Lady, Once on This Island, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.

Stachel, 26, is making his Broadway debut in "The Band's Visit", which stars Tony Shalhoub ("Monk") and the rising star Katrina Lenk.
