Fleetwood Mac guitarist Danny Kirwan dies at 68

Fleetwood Mac guitarist Danny Kirwan dies at 68

The band's founding drummer, and bandmate of Kirwan, Mick Fleetwood acknowledged the guitarist's passing in a statement for the group on his personal Facebook page on Friday evening.

Fleetwood said Kirwan's "love for the blues" led the guitarist to join the Grammy award-winning band, which is known for hits like Landslide and Dreams, in 1968.

The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed.

Kirwan was born in Brixton, South London, and his guitar skills started attracting attention at an early age.

The late musician was sacked Fleetwood Mac in 1972 after apparently becoming over-stressed with his duties in the band.

His first recorded work reached the USA on the 1969 compilation album "English Rose", which included the band's chart-topping United Kingdom instrumental "Albatross" and its B side, Kirwan's composition "Jigsaw Puzzle Blues".

The musician played with the band from 1968 to 1972.

When they went on tour in Germany, Kirwan and Green - one of the other members of the band - both took LSD laced with some kind of powerful ingredient which "changed their behavior" in the following years. The last album her recorded with the band was 1972's Bare Trees. Kirwan continued to play in the group and wrote songs in the LP's including, Future Games, and Bare Trees.

Best Classic Bands will have more on the life and death of Kirwan on Saturday. The original United Kingdom release included seven Kirwan compositions; however, two of the songs were dropped for the album's USA release on Reprise, the band's first for the label. Although he didn't attend, Kirwan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Fleetwood Mac in 1998.
