Not One Woman Made This Year's Forbes '100 Highest-Paid Athletes' List

Retired boxer Floyd Mayweather lived up to his "money" nickname, grabbing top spot thanks largely in part to the $275 million (R3 513 713 500, 00) he earned for just 36 minutes of work in his fight against Connor McGregor in August past year.

The pugilist's income is comprised of roughly $275 million in salary in 2017 and $10 million in endorsements, enough to give all 325 million Americans about 88 cents each. That stems largely from his fight in August with UFC fighter Conor McGregor. Unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by stars from the National Basketball Association and American football, with the man in 100th place being Charlotte Hornets wing player Nicholas Batum on only $22.9m.

Only five golfers feature in Forbes' annual list of the world's highest paid athletes.

Mayweather continues to scorch the rankings; coming in at 14th in ESPN's third annual World Fame 100 - a ranking that takes into account Forbes' annual list as well as several other metrics. Cristiano Ronaldo $108 M 4. The top golfers behind Woods were Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas.

The absence of any women on the list is made worse by the inclusion of Mayweather at the top.

What sets golfers apart, of course, is how they primarily earn their money.

The 100 highest-paid athletes earned a collective $3.8 billion during the past 12 months, up 23% from previous year.

Tennis sensation Serena Williams is typically among the top earners in sports. Williams just missed out with earnings of $18m, while Sharapova still managed to earn $16m, nearly all of it from sponsors who remained to loyal to her. Erm, hands up if you have ever heard of Batum?

The top 100 athletes earned a combined $3.8 billion a year ago, the same amount as the annual budget for the entire city of San Diego.

The list included athletes from 22 countries in 11 sports.
