Sebastian Vettel wins Canadian Grand Prix for 50th career victory

Sebastian Vettel wins Canadian Grand Prix for 50th career victory

Sebastian Vettel praised the steps forward made by Ferrari after taking the lead in the drivers' championship with victory in the Canadian Grand Prix.

After clinching his fourth pole position of the season, Vettel was delighted with the response after a tough Friday practice in Canada.

In the Constructors' Championship, Mercedes leads with 178 points, Ferrari is second with 156 points and Red Bull is third with 107 points.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who could have become the youngest driver ever to take pole, dominated all three practice sessions but the 20-year-old could not keep pace with the Ferraris when it mattered most.

All this left Vettel in command after 40 laps, 5.7 seconds clear of Bottas with Verstappen third ahead of Ricciardo, Hamilton and Raikkonen.

"I think when we look back on this weekend we will accept the fact that, yeah, in hindsight, it would have been nice if we had more time to prepare on the hyper-soft, but it wasn't the case", he told reporters.

Before the race, 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve drove the No. 12 Ferrari his late father Gilles used to win the 1978 Canadian GP in the parade lap.

He added: "I got the job done". "There was some electrical stuff going on that hindered us this morning and then this afternoon, so not the best day, but we're OK". With a new engine upgrade fitted to Vettel's auto this weekend, Ferrari was expected to be one of the favourites in Canada but Vettel was not happy with his performance after he was restricted to just 17 laps in second practice due to vehicle issues at the start of the session.

"The numbers are just in theory, but there would have been gains", Bottas said.

"So I think we have to really work hard now".

"I need to look into it to see exactly what it is, but there was a good chunk of time there, definitely in that corner alone there was pole position for sure if I'd figured out how to fix it".

"Red Bull will also be a threat, but it's cool to see three teams fighting for the win".

"That's why I am very happy to have qualified on pole".

Vettel won the first two races of the year but did not return to the podium until his second-place finish in Monaco last race. Grosjean will likely start the race at the back of the grid.

After 42 laps, sadly, Fernando Alonso's 300th Grand Prix weekend came to an end when, chasing 10th, he was called in to pit and retire.
