White House economic advisor says Justin Trudeau ‘stabbed us in the back’

White House economic advisor says Justin Trudeau ‘stabbed us in the back’

The group managed a common statement in which they agreed to disagree on some issues, only to have Trump disavow the document in a tweet after leaving the meeting.

Peter Navarro lit into Canadian Prime Minister, accusing him of acting in 'bad faith'.

"All Justin Trudeau had to do was take the win", Navarro said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, late Sunday, called Trump's revocation of support for the G7 joint communique "sobering and a little depressing", while adding, in a rare one-on-one interview with ARD public television, "but that's not the end" of the Group of Seven.

While foreign policy issues like North Korea don't usually have much bearing on the polls, Trump's extraordinary outburst on Monday against NATO allies, the European Union and Canada appeared aimed at striking chord with voters who support his "America First" agenda.

Trump negotiated in good faith on the communique agreed by the other members of the G7, only to have Trudeau criticize United States policy after he left, Kudlow said. "Then Justin acts hurt when called out!"

That was part of a string of messages in which the president asserted the United States "pays close the the entire cost of NATO" while other member countries take advantage of the USA on trade.

Trump's top economic advisor Larry Kudlow went after Trudeau Sunday.

Navarro also said "there's a special place in hell" for any foreign leader engaging in "bad faith diplomacy" with Trump, referring to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

He said Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit".

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members, in general, make financial contributions based on their economic output, and as a result of being the world's biggest economy the United States does contribute a larger amount than other nations.

He did him a favour and he was even willing to sign that socialist communique. And what did Trudeau do as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace?

Kudlow says Trump won't let a Canadian prime minister push him around on the eve of his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"Kim must not see American weakness", he told CNN.

"Kudlow accused Trudeau of making his comments for "domestic political consumption" and doing "a great disservice to the whole G7".'He really kind of stabbed us in the back, '" CNN reports.

In his press conference Saturday, Trudeau said he was disappointed in the Trump administration's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union, and Mexico, promising retaliatory measures because Canada "will not be pushed around".

Trudeau, in Quebec City for bilateral meetings with non-G7 leaders after the summit, did not comment as he arrived.

"The nature of the debate we had was rather appeasement and it stopped the escalation in terms of behaviour", Macron, who had exchanged terse Twitter messages with Trump in the run-up to the summit, told reporters. Can't do it in person.

But the criticism left a former Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, stumped.

"As a representative of IL, a state with one of the most important trade relationships with Canada, I have every desire to see our negotiations with Canada continue productively and beneficially, but Prime Minister Trudeau is sabotaging that cause by driving both sides into their corners instead of encouraging a more diplomatic dialogue", Krishnamoorthi said. "We need to stand with our democratic allies".
