Final preparations underway ahead of landmark Trump-Kim summit

Final preparations underway ahead of landmark Trump-Kim summit

The historic first meeting between a sitting US president and and North Korea's leader will take place Tuesday at 9 a.m. when Trump and Kin will meet alone with only translators in the room.

Trump, who arrived Sunday night, tweeted Monday morning: "Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!"

The sudden change in schedule added to a dizzying few days of foreign policy activity for Trump, who shocked USA allies over the weekend when he used a meeting of the Group of Seven industrialized economies in Canada to alienate America's closest friends in the West. Lashing out over trade practices, Trump lobbed insults at his G-7 host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"I feel really", Trump told reporters.

Of course, the stakes for Trump's gamble to meet with Jong Un remain incredibly high, and the administration spent much of the day downplaying the chances for a lasting breakthrough.

Last week, Rodman said he would "give whatever support is needed" to his "friends" Trump and Kim.

Hours earlier, a jet carrying Kim landed.

Trump and Kim may well end up branding tomorrow's summit a success.

Among other things that Trump could bring up during the summit are regional security concerns regarding North Korea and Japan, as well as the situation regarding human rights in the country.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) released a statement saying the two discussed mutual relations and the situation on the Korean peninsula, with Prime Minister Lee thanking Kim for his and Trump's "bold and admirable decision" to hold the summit.

Trump is set to meet with Lee on Monday. Trump briefly called off the summit a few weeks ago before agreeing again to the meeting.

In part, these lowered expectations are a reflection of the extreme skepticism among many that the North can be persuaded to give up a nuclear programme it has stubbornly built over the decades, often in secrecy and despite intense sanctions, worldwide condemnation and widespread suffering among its people.

The fighting ended on 27 July, 1953, but the war technically continues today because instead of a difficult-to-negotiate peace treaty, military officers for the USA -led United Nations, North Korea and China signed an armistice that halted the fighting.

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the U.S. and the North. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation.

The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists who have converged on Singapore, and by gawkers around the world, up until he shakes hands with Trump on Tuesday.

"The underlying driver is a transformational process of Kim Jong-un leading North Korea into a new place in the region and the world", said John Delury, a professor of Chinese studies at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Experts on North Korea say that the shortened meeting time leaves nearly no room to forge a path for Pyongyang's "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization", or CVID, which the US State Department was promising just last week.

Following that test, North Korea declared its state nuclear program was complete.

Since the first US atomic test in the desert of New Mexico on July 16, 1945 eight countries have conducted an estimated 2,056 nuclear test explosions, mostly in the late 1950's and early 1960's - the darkest days of the Cold War, according to data from the Arms Control Association.
