INTERNATIONAL - Over 600 homes destroyed by Hawaii volcano eruption

HONOLULU - Lava from the Kilauea volcano that flowed into Kapoho Bay has created almost a mile of new land and officials with the U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday the flow is still very active and there's no way to know when the eruption will end or if more lava-spewing vents will open.

The smoke is a result of the lava hitting the ocean water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The lava destroyed over 600 houses in Hawaii and poured in low-laying neighbourhoods of Hawaii.

Kim, who had previously said it would take a minimum of $5 million per mile to fix roads ravaged by Kilauea, said the $12 million will help Hawaii County "focus on the critical tasks of making life better for our people affected by the eruption".

Kilauea, the most active of Hawaii's five volcanoes, is feared to be on the brink of another major eruption after being rattled by more than 500 earthquakes over the weekend.

"This is the hottest lava we've seen during this eruption", Wendy Stovall, a scientist with USGS told CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now.

Since the Kilauea volcano first erupted in Leilani Estates on May 3, it has spread more than four billion cubic feet of lava on Hawaii's biggest island.

The lava from Fissure 8 is feeding one channel that is flowing into the ocean at Kapoho Bay, creating land that now juts out almost a mile from the former shoreline.

Lava completely covered the Big Island's Vacationland neighborhood, destroying hundreds of homes and pouring into the Kapoho Bay, where it formed at least 0.8 miles of land that juts into the sea, the Associated Press reports.

Depending on climate, rainfall and other variables, new vegetation could start growing soon, but it would take much longer for the fertile land and lush rainforests to build back up.

Increased natural disaster activity in the region earlier in the day fit what Stovall called a "pattern" for explosive eruptions at Kilauea's summit.

"Rainfall really makes a difference", Hawaii Volcanoes National Park spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane said.

But the land is still highly unpredictable, and once the lava cools and hardens it will leave behind a jagged, scorched landscape with razor-sharp shards of volcanic rock.

Scientists from the air and on the ground are trying to track existing ground cracks.
