The list, which celebrates over a thousand extraordinary people across the United Kingdom, also recognised 103-year-old Rosemary Powell - the oldest recipient - with an MBE for her charitable service, having spent over 97 years volunteering for the Royal British Legion.

In total 1,057 people have received an award in 2018.

"To receive such an MBE from Her Majesty is just a tremendous honour".

For the first time, women have outnumbered men on the list of Australians receiving one of the top Queen's Birthday honours.

Meanwhile, the Japanese-born, Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro - whose works include 'The Remains of the Day', the movie adaptation of which starred Thompson - has been awarded a knighthood by the Queen.

In the 100th anniversary year of women's suffrage, there are a range of awards for women at the forefront of their professions or who have championed women's rights, including Yvonne Coghill, director of workforce race equality, who has been made a CBE for their commitment to equality and diversity in the NHS. She has picked up an MBE for services to Paralympic winter Olympic sport.

In the business sphere Judy Naake, who made millions selling St Tropez self-tanning products, initially from the back of her auto, receives an MBE for services to entrepreneurship, the community and philanthropy.

HIV researcher Professor David Cooper was posthumously awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia for his eminent service to medicine, particularly in the area of HIV/AIDS research, as a clinician, scientist and administrator, to the development of treatment therapies, and to health programs in South East Asia and the Pacific.

There is an MBE for Lucy Prior, global trade director at Rail Alliance, for services to rail exports after she raised awareness of strategic developments in the sector to the SME community.

Paralympian Kurt Fearnley and author Kate Grenville are among the 1007 Australians on this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List.
