Sessions excludes domestic, gang violence from asylum claims

Sessions excludes domestic, gang violence from asylum claims

But Sessions recently called into question whether such cases merited protection under U.S. asylum laws. ´"Unlike the federal judiciary system, the United States immigration courts fall under the Justice Department´s jurisdiction, and the attorney general can intervene".

Michelle Brané, director of the Women's Refugee Commission's Migrant Rights and Justice program headquartered in NY, said, "Attorney General Sessions' decision to limit the reasons why people can claim asylum is a devastating blow to families who come to our country seeking protection and safety".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions delivers remarks at the Justice Department's Executive Officer for Immigration Review (EOIR) Annual Legal Training Program on Monday in Tysons, Va. Sessions spoke about his plan to limit reasons for people to claim asylum in the U.S.

This reverses the Obama administration's guidance, and will affect tens of thousands of people, mostly women, who apply for asylum as victims of rape and other domestic violence each year, coming especially from chaotic Central American countries.

Monday's decision marks Sessions' latest effort to greatly restrict immigration.

Sessions announced his decision this afternoon.

The Trump administration has accused migrants of exploiting the asylum system to gain entry to the United States, aware that the immigration courts are so backlogged that their cases could take years to complete.

"This is a decision that could have an extremely negative on women who are seeking asylum, people who are victimized due to their gender", she said. She appealed and, in 2016, the board ruled in her favor, saying it was clear that the Salvadoran government was unable to protect her even after she moved to another part of the country.

Immigrants say they have credible fear about returning to their home countries, so border agents have no choice but to place them in asylum proceedings. In March, Sessions ended a requirement that asylum seekers get a full hearing before an immigration judge, making it easier for judges to close cases they deem frivolous or unlikely to succeed.

Sessions also pointed out the U.S.is not responsible for alleviating all the problems in the world, and told immigration judges his decision will provide more clarity to help them rule fairly.
