5-year-old OR girl was paralyzed by a tick bite

5-year-old OR girl was paralyzed by a tick bite

In the us state of MS a five year old girl lost the ability to walk and talk after a tick bite to the head.

When Jessica Griffin's 5-year-old daughter Kailyn Kirk went to sleep the night of June 5, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

A MS mother panicked when her 5-year-old daughter woke up unable to walk, and could barely speak. After tons of blood work and a CT of the head UMMC has ruled it as tick paralysis!

"PLEASE for the love of god check your kids for ticks!" she wrote.

Griffin called her husband, who told her to immediately remove the tick, put it in a plastic bag, and rush Kailyn to the hospital. Tick paralysis begins after a tick becomes attached to a person's head. According to the Center for disease control US, symptoms usually occur within 24 hours after removal of the tick As expected, the effect of the toxin has passed and the girl returned to normal after 12 hours. According to Griffin's Facebook posts, her daughter was discharged later that day and has recovered normally. "It's more common in children than it is adults", she wrote last Wednesday. Scary is [an] UNDERSTATEMENT!

A 5-year-old girl in MS was paralyzed for over a day from a tick bite, an unusual case highlighting the importance of protecting against insects as peak biting season begins. Girls often have longer hair than boys, which ticks can attach to and hide in, increasing the risk of tick paralysis, the report said.

More: Should I burn a tick off? Paralysis sets in slowly, starting in the legs and spreading into upper body, stopping your breathing if left unchecked.

Tick paralysis is caused by female ticks on the verge of laying eggs. We are being admitted to the hospital for observation and we're hoping her balance gets straightened out!

But the little girl was also having trouble talking.

The best way to avoid tick bites that can cause disease is to avoid walking through or brushing against vegetation and perform daily self-examinations for ticks. Removing the tick usually provides symptom relief within 24 hours, though if the tick isn't removed, paralysis can spread to the respiratory system and can be fatal. Later that evening, Kailin was able to walk out of the hospital.
