Handshakes instead of sledges to kick off series between Australia and England

Handshakes instead of sledges to kick off series between Australia and England

Australia will bid to heal wounds from March's ball-tampering scandal by employing the football-style ritual of both set of players shaking hands before play.

Australia skipper Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner were banned for a year over the ball-tampering incident in the third Test against South Africa, paving the way for Paine to take over the captaincy.

Captain Eoin Morgan said that the defeat will act as ideal preparation for the series, and Bairstow agreed that it will be a completely different challenge to face an Australia side going through an uncertain period following the suspension of two key players and a change in leadership.

"I'm absolutely happy with that, it doesn't bother me", Morgan said.

Agar said that Australia's squad had a "nice refreshed" feel to it and was particularly excited at the prospect of tall quick bowler Billy Stanlake taking on the powerful England batting line-up. "For us it's good that England didn't win because you always want to start with a win".

"We've had a professional relationship with Dave for five years now [and] we've always found him to be a pretty normal and humble bloke", Nine's Wide World of Sports quoted Malone as saying in the announcement.

"Again we've spoken about this a lot in the last few months; we are aware that words are just words".

"We'll be judged on our actions going forward and it'll be plain for everyone to see". We've spoken about our values and how we want to be perceived by the Australian public and the cricket public in general. New Australia coach Justin Langer has vowed his team will respect the line between banter and abuse in the series against England.

But as well as trying to mould a new-look side, Paine must also cement his own place.

Having lost to Scotland for the first time in their history, England must now turn their attentions to Australia, who they face at the Oval on Wednesday in the first of a five-match series.

Asked if he felt any pressure, Paine replied: "None at all".

"I'm really confident, feel like I'm bowling quite nicely especially with the white ball", he said. I'm captaining Australia where 12 months ago I was almost working for Kookaburra sports.

"Every time we've played against Australia, the side we've come up against has played hard, tough cricket, so we'll expect that as well".

Thank you for your feedback.
