Most senior military officials caught off guard by Trump

CBS News' David Martin reports that Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said Defense Secretary James Mattis "was not surprised".

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un pledged to work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula while Washington committed to providing security guarantees for its old enemy.

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), NPR noted, sent a letter to President Donald Trump back in June this year, urging him to make the issue part of the president's negotiation with North Korea's supreme leader.

"Summits were being set up [between United States presidents and] with Kim Jong Un's father Kim Jong Il in 1992, in 1994 and in 2006 and on each occasion they fell through".

Trump and Kim arrived in Singapore on Sunday and are set to leave later on Tuesday.

All the experts in attendance, including the delegation from China, were unanimous in their belief that peace and diplomatic relations could not be restored if the leaders of United States and North Korea could not meet and speak. But, Koreans are anxious they could be affected by the summit discussion.

"Regarding the U.S. President Trump's comment regarding ending of the combined military drill and so on, we need to find out the exact meaning or intention behind his comments at this point", South Korea said in a statement. It is also concerning that there was nearly no mention of North Korea's atrocious human rights records and whether it would be a condition required in any agreement.

Nam said Seoul welcomed the news that President Trump had "sufficiently expressed" his trust in Kim.

The exercises allow US and South Korean forces to practice mobilizing soldiers in the event of conflict, and to run computer simulations to improve coordination between the two militaries. Only time will tell if North Korea is serious this time, and in the meantime we must continue to apply maximum economic pressure.

"Whether this will result in a verifiable agreement to dismantle North Korea's nuclear weapons program, America and the world will wait to find out".

As reports emerged that the South Korean government was surprised by the announcement, questions were raised about whether Mattis and other US policymakers had also been caught off guard.
