Texomans react to net neutrality repeal

Texomans react to net neutrality repeal

The nationwide repeal of "net neutrality" took effect six months after the Federal Communications Commission voted to undo the rules, which had barred broadband and cellphone companies from favoring their own services and discriminating against rivals such as Netflix. Many Internet providers, such as AT&T and Verizon, have said they do not and will not block or slow content. Comcast has also said it does not block or slow content and has no plans to offer paid prioritization. Plain and simple, thanks to the FCC's rollback of net neutrality, Internet providers have the legal green light, the technical ability, and business incentive to discriminate and manipulate what we see, read, and learn online.

Ajit Pai, whom President Trump named to be his new FCC chairman, and who spearheaded the repeal of the net-neutrality rules, killed that inquiry soon after assuming the chairmanship. Continue reading to find out what changes today and what lies ahead for the charged issue.

That may sound annoying for Netflix users, but it's easy to imagine farther-reaching consequences given the ubiquity of the internet, which now functions more like electricity than an information service. Those Obama-era rules prevented ISPs from blocking or slowing legal traffic, or from being paid for prioritized, faster delivery.

"Under the Federal Communications Commission's Restoring Internet Freedom Order, which takes effect Monday, the internet will be just such an open platform".

The Internet Association said Monday that the "internet industry remains committed to restoring net neutrality protections through the courts, legislation, and administrative action". For example, we empower the Federal Trade Commission to police internet service providers for anticompetitive acts and unfair or deceptive practices.

Supporters of net neutrality are pushing state lawmakers to fight the repeal, but Mayer says this cannot be done at the state level.

The Internet Innovation Alliance, a coalition of business and non-profit organizations under leadership of Former Congressman Rick Boucher, D-Va., also defended the new laws. But like many ardent net neutrality supporters, Schaub said he thinks it will take a while for the repeal to trickle down to customers, saying it will be more like "small and creeping changes rather than sudden shifts".

"The FTC will once again be able to protect Americans consistently across the internet economy, and the FCC will work hand-in-hand with our partners at the FTC to do just that", Pai wrote in an op-ed column Monday.

Without Net Neutrality, internet providers can pick and choose which sites they grant access to and at which speeds, opening the door to censorship. They can also set up "fast lanes" for preferred services - in turn, relegating everyone else to "slow lanes".

But they could start charging extra for services not yet offered.

A group of 22 states sued the FCC over the repeal.

In 2015, the FCC stripped the FTC - the nation's premier consumer protection agency - of its authority over internet service providers.

Yesterday marked the end of USA government rules regarding net neutrality, but the new policy faces legal challenges from individual states, some of which have also developed their own rules on the matter.
