USA, Canada and Mexico to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

USA, Canada and Mexico to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino delivers a speech during the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow, Russia June 13, 2018.

The current blueprint calls for Canada and Mexico to stage 10 games each with the USA hosting 60.

That's the spirit of the World Cup.

The expanded format in 2026 will include 48 teams, playing a total of 80 matches.

They warned "the amount of new infrastructure required for the Morocco 2026 bid to become reality can not be overstated". Under the terms of the bid, Canada and Mexico will each host 10 matches.

President Donald Trump welcomed the news, tweeting: "The U.S., together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup".

Moroccan officials, who have stressed throughout their campaign how snatching the tournament from under the noses of the North American favourites will transform the landscape of their country, remain quietly confident they can upset the odds. We are ready made. "This is not geopolitics. Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us (including at the United Nations)?" he wrote.

Delegates of Canada, Mexico and the United States celebrate after winning a joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

"We see very limited economic impact at the national level given the limited duration of the World Cup and the very large size of the country's economy", Moody's analysts said in a report last May, adding that the expected boost to tourism "will likely be short-lived". Federation Internationale de Football Association is scheduled to hold a vote to see if it will allow 48 teams to play in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It prompted an overhaul of the rules.

"Hosting a FIFA World Cup™ is an extraordinary honor and privilege", said Steven Reed, President of Canada Soccer and Co-Chair of the United Bid.

Five teams from every confederation except for UEFA, plus one additional team from CONCACAF, will take part in an intercontinental playoff tournament to determine the final two slots.

But FIFA votes are notoriously unpredictable.

While Ghana's former FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi has been handed a 90-day Fifa ban following corruption allegations, the country's government is on the verge of dissolving the association, with two GFA officials barred from travelling to attend the congress in Russian Federation. "Now everyone must choose". FIFA, soccer's worldwide organizing body, said the Brazilian government spent roughly $15 billion on that year's event.

"We congratulate all of those who worked tirelessly to bring the World Cup back to North America and thank the countries that voted for the United Bid, and for their belief in our vision for the future of the sport in our region", continued the MLS statement.

The North American bid beat competition from Morocco, which was hoping to become just the second African country to host soccer's biggest global tournament.

Of the superpowers, China, France, and Italy voted for Morocco while Russia, Germany, and Japan voted the joint bid.
