White House aide apologises for 'special place in hell' comment

White House aide apologises for 'special place in hell' comment

Trump accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of making "false statements", and said the USA is looking into automobile tariffs.

"Let me correct a mistake I made", Navarro said at a Wall Street Journal conference Tuesday, according to video provided by the newspaper's CFO Network.

"I think we are all sitting with bated breath hoping that cooler heads prevail, but most of us believe there's an equal chance that they won't", said Dennis DesRosiers, president of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc.in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

Navarro had told Fox News on Sunday that there was a "special place in hell" for the Canadian prime minister that "engages in bad-faith diplomacy" with U.S. President Donald Trump.

That was the message Tuesday as U.S. President Donald Trump continued to take personal shots at Justin Trudeau, blasted Canada's dairy industry and threatened to make Canadians pay for the prime minister's alleged effrontery.

Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland warned Tuesday that Canada is prepared for anything, even as the USA considers auto tariffs that experts say would lead to a full-out trade war, harming both Canadian and American businesses.

Trump says he watched that news conference on his way to Singapore, and was upset because he thought he and Trudeau had had a positive meeting in Charlevoix.

The United States imposed new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum less than two weeks ago on a "national security" basis. The country has rallied together, with public opinion polling showing there's wide support for Canada's retaliatory tariffs against the steel and aluminum duties that will kick in for some USA goods on July 1.

A Trump adviser had suggested Sunday that Trump saw Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before the meeting with Kim.

Mr. Trump has threatened to bring down a 25-per-cent tariff on all Canadian-made cars and trucks, which would hit four times more exports and jobs than the metals tariffs. And I say, 'Push him around? "It was very friendly".

I have a good relationship with Justin Trudeau.

"We finished the (G7) meeting and really everybody was happy".

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada". He learned. You can't do that. "In conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate".

Showing support for industry amid the turmoil, Trudeau met Tuesday with a group of farmers in Ottawa who benefit from the supply management system that has drawn the ire of Trump. He said the Canadian leader must not have realised that Trump had televisions on Air Force One, allowing him to monitor Trudeau's news conference at the end of the G-7 summit.

A recent report by the Peterson Institute for International Economics found that blanket 25-per-cent tariffs on automobile imports to the US, including auto parts, would reduce production by 1.5 per cent and could cause job losses of 195,000 in the USA over the first three years, and would affect $200 billion in US imports.

"I think I've helped them".
