Google Doodle celebrates diverse cultures for World Cup kickoff

Google Doodle celebrates diverse cultures for World Cup kickoff

Canada has played host to numerous Federation Internationale de Football Association events in the past, including the men's Under-16 World Championship in 1987, the 2002 under-19 women's World Championship, the 2007 men's Under-20 World Cup, the 2014 Under-20 Women's World Cup and the 2015 Women's World Cup.

The Associated Press reports that FIFA's member associations voted 134 to 65, with one no-vote, Wednesday in favour of the joint North American bid by Canada, the USA and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup men's soccer tournament over that of Morocco. Their lone opponent was Morocco.

"Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege, the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", an emotional US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said on stage after the vote.

President Donald Trump welcomed the news, tweeting: "The U.S., together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup".

"It's always a bit of a stronger bid with more countries, but at same time if we are talking about England, with their infrastructure, they can host on their own or with the rest of the U.K". The intercontinental playoff will be held somewhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico, perhaps in November 2025.

Two venues - the University of Victoria and Royal Athletic Park - are mentioned specifically in the bid book.

Look for MetLife Stadium to host the 2026 World Cup final.

To do so would have invited ridicule when it needed to build or renovate the 14 stadiums it wants to use - a task FIFA's technical report said "cannot be overstated".

Morocco FA president Fouzi Lekjaa said: "I would like to reaffirm the determination of my country, Morocco, to continue to work for football, to work for the youth and also to realise some day our dream to host the World Cup in Morocco".

Montopoli, speaking for the Canadian portion of the bid, said only that they had the government guarantees they had required. Whether FIFA also extends this courtesy to Mexico and Canada - the latter a relative nonentity in global soccer that has qualified for just one World Cup in 1986 - remains to be seen.

In qualification for the 2018 World Cup, the US surprisingly finished fifth in a group of six countries in the fifth round of qualification, only ahead of Trinidad & Tobago. Will it inspire interest in the game to the point where future generations of American players have the desire and ability to take the national team to another level?

Venues for the 2026 World Cup, which is slated to be the first WC to feature 48 teams, will be chosen from 23 stadiums that now exist or are already under construction. Both the United States and Canada failed to qualify for this year's World Cup.
