Half of Americans approve of Trump's handling of North Korea - Reuters/Ipsos poll

FILE PHOTO: North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un listens to U.S. President Donald Trump as they meet in a one-on-one bilateral session at the start of their summit on the resort island of Sentosa, Singapore June 12, 2018.

An we didn't hear any of that in Singapore.

Trump was also optimistic about the progress they achieved, stating, "We are going to take care of a very big and very unsafe problem for the world".

Trump at a news conference Tuesday after the summit suddenly announced that he would end "provocative" and "expensive" joint military operations between the US and South Korea, declaring "I think it's inappropriate to have war games" while negotiations were underway.

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean nuclear threat. So, the president made some concessions.

It devoted half of its six pages to the meeting and splashed 33 photos of Kim and Trump shaking hands, attending a working lunch and sitting down to sign the agreement to denuclearize on the cover and on the inside pages. He gave Kim Jong Un an audience with the president.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday exploded at an unidentified reporter who asked him a very basic question about verifying the destruction of North Korea's nuclear arsenal.

The welcome from Japan was conspicuously less effusive than from other countries, with Tokyo under direct threat from North Korean missiles and reliant on the United States for its defence.

The secretary of state said on Wednesday that the USA wants quick progress on North Korea's promise to dismantle its nuclear program. On Wednesday morning, he took to Twitter to claim there was "no longer" a nuclear threat posed by the North Korean regime.

Trump received a 51 percent approval rating for his handling of North Korea and also led the list of leaders who should take the most credit for the summit and the joint pledge. Ultimately, in the short term, at least while diplomacy continues, Trump's tweets seem to indicate he is ready to live with the fact that North Korea has nuclear weapons and potentially the capacity to fire them at the United States, in an implicit erosion of the USA strategic position. But Trump's triumphalism is not based on concrete commitments by Kim that were established by his own administration's expectations setting before the talks.
