How anti-Trump hysteria helps the president on North Korea

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking to reporters in Seoul, said the United States hoped for "major disarmament" of North Korea by the end of 2020. The likelihood of Trump launching a first strike against North Korea, thus setting South Korea, where more than 100,000 Americans live and/or work, ablaze and risking a strike against population centers in the USA, was similarly low.

"Under the circumstances that we're negotiating a very comprehensive complete deal I think it's inappropriate to have war games", Trump said during a press conference in Singapore earlier this week. "Only then will there be relief from the sanctions".

Sputnik: What do you make of the reaction by North Korea's neighbours to the summit with Shinzo Abe saying no concrete steps have been taken?

President Trump returned on Wednesday from his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore and issued what would be a remarkable statement - if it were true.

Last year's talking point was that Trump, with his "fire and fury" talk, was leading the US into a nuclear war with North Korea.

On the issue the world has been most fixated on - North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear arsenal meant to target the entire USA mainland - Trump and Kim signed a joint statement that contained a repeat of past vows to work toward a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.

The president's remarks about North Korea no longer being a threat were echoed Thursday by South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who said the Trump-Kim summit meant the world had escaped the threat of war.

A government source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Japanese officials planned to discuss the summit meeting with North Korean officials at an global conference on Northeast Asian security to be held in Mongolia on Thursday and Friday.

Despite tough USA talk before the summit about "complete" and "verifiable" denuclearization, the vaguely worded 1 1/2-page document Trump and Kim signed doesn't include that language and essentially represents "tacit approval" of North Korea's nuclear program, said Jeffery Lewis, director of the East Asia Non-Proliferation Program at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey, California. Forty percent say the former real estate developer should take the most credit, followed by South Korean President Moon Jae-in with 11 percent.

"It has grown its capabilities far greater than any other country previously under the regime of Kim Jong-un - I recall a testimony from a defector, stating that it now has around 1,800 specialists, some of them handpicked as RNK's most talented computer experts".

In his post-summit press conference, Trump made the surprise announcement that the United States would halt joint military exercises with its security ally Seoul - something long sought by Pyongyang, which claims the drills are a rehearsal for invasion.

Trump's claim that North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat is questionable. In return, Trump has promised to stop US military drills in South Korea.

Japanese officials are planning to unofficially consult with North Korean officials during a two-day worldwide conference in Mongolia through Friday.

"Let's see if I have this straight", she said. Trump cast the decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue.

The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the Korean War and has used them in a variety of drills.

"So that's good for a number of reasons, in addition to which we save a tremendous amount of money", Mr Trump said.
