North Korean media praises Trump-Kim summit as 'meeting of the century'

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", he wrote in the first of three tweets about the summit.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise described positive steps from the meeting, such as Kim saying he's willing to take steps toward denuclearization.

Trump's comment on suspending joint exercises with Seoul have caught South Korea's Defense Ministry and USA forces in Korea off guard.

Trump declared he and Kim had developed "a very special bond", and Kim said the leaders had "decided to leave the past behind" and promised, "The world will see a major change".

In return, Mr Trump, to the surprise of US ally South Korea and his own military, said he would end joint US-South Korea military exercises.

While hopes were high ahead of the first-ever meeting between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, expectations of what the summit could produce fell in the days leading up to the meeting. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"

"Most certainly in the president's first term", he said, speaking to a pool of journalists in Seoul, South Korea, where he was meeting his South Korean and Japanese counterparts.

The pair are set to meet until early afternoon, when it is hoped that they will present a joint agreement including steps for the North's abandonment of nuclear weapons.

Trump's chest-thumping tweets seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the USA invasion of Iraq.

"I want to hear the details by phone (from Trump)".

Trump also said he wanted to withdraw the United States troops stationed in the South, something he promised on the campaign trail, saying: "I'd like to be able to bring them back home". "Even with intrusive verification, if we suspect North Korea has enough fissile material for 35 weapons, and they declare only 30, we wouldn't be able to find the remaining amount quickly".

Trump, who has frequently sparred with the media, was also unsparing in his criticism of television coverage of the summit, singling out two networks for scorn.

Some more major exchanges, such as joint economic projects or infrastructure development, remain restricted by global sanctions on Pyongyang.

"As the whole world is swept in huge interest in and excitement about the historic, unprecedented summit, Kim left his hotel on the night of 12th to return home after successfully wrapping up the North Korea-U.S. summit in Singapore", Korean Central TV reported. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August.

Japan has repeatedly called for the issue to be raised in discussions with Pyongyang, and Trump said at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon that he had discussed the issue with Kim. The military exercises are central to the security of U.S. allies and crucial to maintaining the readiness and interoperability of forces.

Trump on Tuesday seemed fine with this, saying he thought Kim was being honest.
