President Trump, Kim Jong Un meet for historic summit in Singapore

President Trump, Kim Jong Un meet for historic summit in Singapore

President Trump will be staying at the Shangri La Hotel and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un will reside at the St. Regis Hotel.

It wasn't immediately clear what specific progress, if any, had been made in preliminary discussions between US and North Korean officials in the run-up to the Tuesday summit.

Officials from both North Korea and the USA have been laying the groundwork for discussions between Kim Jong Un and President Trump.

On the eve of a historic summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, Pompeo sounded an upbeat tone, saying that preparatory talks were advancing more quickly than expected. And the abrupt change in schedule came shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had seemed to lower expectations for the meeting, which Trump had earlier predicted could potentially yield an on-the-spot end to the Korean War.

Sanctions on North Korea would remain in place until that had happened, Mr Pompeo said.

After the signing, Trump said he expected to "meet many times" in the future with Kim and, in response to questions, said he "absolutely" would invite Kim to the White House. While aboard Air Force One, the president also tweeted out a plug for South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ahead of the state's Tuesday primary.

Now, Trump plans to hold his first meeting with Kim alone save for a pair of interpreters, heightening concerns he will stray from the approach U.S. officials hope the President will follow.

North Korea is seeking a security guarantee - possibly including a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War - and the removal of the US's nuclear umbrella protecting allies South Korea and Japan.

"Tomorrow we will get our clearest indication to date of whether Chairman Kim Jong Un truly shares this vision", Pompeo said.

The first thing to look out for is whether the two hit it off in person.

Up early in Singapore, Trump tweeted with cautious optimism: "Meetings between staffs and representatives are going well and quickly. but in the end, that doesn't matter".

Other foreign policy analysts said the failure of the G7 summit suggests Trump may not be able to strike a deal beneficial to the United States with anyone.

"Secondly it needs to agree on some statements of principle on heading towards a nuclear-free (Korean) peninsula, and third it needs to have started the process: actual steps in that direction, agreeing on some first steps".

Pompeo, addressing reporters ahead of the summit, said the USA was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".

"North Korea has previously confirmed to us its willingness to denuclearise and we are eager to see if those words prove honest", he said.

Kim toured Singapore's nightlife on Monday evening. Sources told Axios that measure was conditional upon what Kim was willing to give the U.S.in return.

Such treats are unheard of for most North Koreans, even for government officials, who have seen their chances of overseas travel wither in recent years as their country's isolation has increased under sanctions imposed over its nuclear and missile programs. North Korea's state media reported Sunday that they will discuss "wide-ranging and profound views on the issue of establishing new DPRK-U.S. relations, the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era".
