Raccoon that captivated internet is rescued safely in St. Paul

Raccoon that captivated internet is rescued safely in St. Paul

When a maintenance crew tried to help the raccoon get down from the ledge Tuesday, he jumped to the nearby UBS Plaza building and climbed 20 stories, according to the public radio station. Animal Control, fearing for its health after two days without food and water, had left cat food on the roof in hopes of spurring the animal on to safety.

The masked animal did so by scaling a St. Paul, Minnesota, skyscraper, a la Spider-Man, and in the process riveting - and terrifying - legions of humans who followed online.

The racoon eventually stopped for a nap on a window ledge on the 22nd floor, Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported. The building's windows don't open, according to MPR.

You did just see the raccoon climb up to the roof, that happened early this morning. The raccoon then steadily ascended UBS Tower, taking the time to groom itself and lay down along the way.

The animal became a bit of a star on social media as people began to cheer on the creature during its attempt to summit the building.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn even offered "a thousand bucks to the non-political charity of choice to anyone who saves this raccoon".

Tim Nelson, a reporter for Minnesota Public Radio, live-tweeted the climb, including the good news that the raccoon reached the roof Wednesday around 2:45 a.m. CT.

A raccoon scrambles along a ledge on the side of the Town Square building in downtown St. Paul, Minn., on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

"Raccoons don't think ahead very much, so raccoons don't have very good impulse control", she said, admitting she could barely sleep she was so anxious about the animal.
