Red Cross launches Missing Types campaign

Red Cross launches Missing Types campaign

They want people to donate so there are no blood types missing from hospital shelves.

"Deleting the letters of the main blood groups from a company's name in their adverts, email signatures and other marketing material is a fun and interactive way to raise awareness of South Africa's urgent need for new blood donors", she said.

The campaign is calling for new blood donors and those who haven't given in a while to help fill the gaps and ensure lifesaving blood remains available for patients.

Every two seconds, someone in the country needs blood.

US health officials say they need to collect more than 13 million blood units annually to meet patients' needs.

Dr Moeti drew attention to the kind gestures of regular and voluntary blood donors for patients in need, and encouraged people to care for one another by donating blood. It's not just blood: it's keeping families together. O negative blood donors are considered "universal", and their blood type is needed most readily in trauma situations and emergency rooms across the country. Those in need include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.

Every two seconds, someone in the US needs blood.

The SANBS hopes this irreverent disappearing act will similarly weave a special kind of magic in South Africa, where only 1 per cent of South Africans give blood regularly.

The Red Cross appreciates the support of its 18 lead partners who have joined the #MissingType campaign, including: Adobe, Anheuser-Busch, AvalonBay Communities, Inc., Domino's, Dropbox, Google, IBM, Land O'Lakes, Inc., Mastercard, Nationwide, Neiman Marcus, the New York Yankees, Oreo, PayPal, Salesforce, State Farm®, Sunoco and U.S. Bank. Thirty-eight percent of the population is eligible to donate blood.

NZBS Announces Updates to Popular Donor App New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) announces major updates to its already successful and user-friendly Donor App. This week is also a great occasion for Canadian Blood Services to celebrate 20 years of working with donors to meet patients' needs, and to remind Canadians more blood donors are needed.
