Tony Awards 2018: See all the performances

Shalhoub, who won for his portrayal of Tewfiq, the leader of an Egyptian band, used his minute in the spotlight to speak about his father's arrival at Ellis Island from Lebanon almost a century ago.

"I think we want ultimately the tone of the night to be about positivity and inclusively, and certainly we're both people who are politically minded, but that's not really what this particular night is about", Bareilles said.

Stachel, 26, is making his Broadway debut in "The Band's Visit".

"And after 9/11, it was very, very hard for me", Mr. Stachel continued, as his parents beamed with pride from the audience.

The show also won awards for its luminous lead actress, Katrina Lenk, and its director, book and score, among others.

Orin Wolf, producer of "The Band's Visit", didn't have overall Monday ticket-sales numbers, but he said the post-Tony increase was significant. Composer David Yazbek, speaking later at the Tony after-party, said the show had special resonance amid "the climate of divisiveness that we're seeing".

Others were less caustic though just as inspiring.

Co-hosts Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles kicked the show off with a self-parodying duet on piano for all the losers out there - including them. Salonga plays the role of one of the island gods who will help Ti Moune reunite with the man who has captured her heart. He referenced a recent Supreme Court order upholding the right of a Colorado baker to refuse to bake a cake for the marriage of a same sex couple.

The "Amazing Spiderman" fame actor honoured the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community, saying: "It is a spirit that says no to oppression".

Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play: Laurie Metcalf, "Three Tall Women". He said one moment will be dedicated to the movement but details remained "top secret".

A British revival of "Angels in America", Tony Kushner's monumental, two-part drama about AIDS, life and love during the 1980s, grabbed three big awards, including best play revival and acting trophies for Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane.

During the ceremony, Robert De Niro directed an expletive at US President Donald Trump when introducing a performance from Bruce Springsteen, causing the network to bleep him while live on air. And then he did it again. So, which number had audiences at home laughing/cheering/crying/snotting the most?
