Yoga acts as a bridge between India and China: Bambawale

Yoga acts as a bridge between India and China: Bambawale

Initiated with a proposition by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, June 21 was proclaimed International Yoga Day by the United Nations on December 11, 2014. In India, the main event was kick-started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who performed yoga along with over 50,000 enthusiasts at Dehradun's sprawling Forest Research Institute.

"From Tokyo to Toronto, from Stockholm to Sao Paulo, Yoga has become a positive influence in the lives of millions", Modi told participants on the lush green lawns.

The prime minister also took to social media to share the intricacies of various yoga asanas.

India celebrated the International Day of Yoga on Thursday, officials said.

Members of the Modi administration followed the Prime Minister's lead and either attended or hosted yoga events around the country. While many powers in the world divide us, yoga unites us. Thereafter, A Mass yoga practice session was conducted under the supervision of a Yoga Guru from Arab Yoga Foundation that included an overview of the benefits of yoga, demonstration of the important Asanas and postures.

"In a world where non-communicable diseases, stress and lifestyle-related ailments are rising, yoga can play a central role in mitigating these diseases to create a healthy mind and body".

"Yoga is lovely because it is ancient yet modern, it is constant yet evolving", he said.

UNESCO added yoga to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2016 in recognition of its influence on Indian society, "from health and medicine to education and the arts". "I hope that Yoga can become binding force for the world", he said. "Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature".

Following a request from PM Modi, the United Nations General Assembly, in December 2014, had declared that June 21 would be observed as International Yoga Day every year. "It can show the way in defeating tensions and mindless anxiety", Modi said on Twitter.

Submarine staff from India's Eastern Naval Command were pictured doing yoga poses, as were soldiers in Secunderabad.
