Dirofilaria repens is spread by mosquito bites, which coincides with the woman's statement that she recently went to a rural area located outside Moscow, where she suffered from frequent mosquito bites.

The lump would cause a little itching and burning in the spot it nestled, but she had no other symptoms.

"A physical examination showed a superficial moving oblong nodule at the upper eyelid", doctors who treated the woman, wrote in the journal.

Two things you never want to happen to you: finding a worm crawling around in your face; and ending up as a case study in a medical journal because of it. Ten days after that, a lump resurfaced on her upper lip, causing massive swelling.

Indeed, the Russian woman had the worm removed and made a full recovery, the report said.

During a surgery to remove the lump, doctors discovered the lump was actually a long, white worm that had been crawling around underneath her skin. In humnans, D. repens usually manifests as either a wandering worm in the subcutaneous tissue or a granulomatous nodule, although there are reports of pulmonary dirofilariasis with this species. This organism usually finds it hard for breeding when human beings become the host through mosquito bites.

But humans can become accidental hosts of the thread-like worm - meaning the worm doesn't intend to infect a human. The doctors used local anaesthesia, gripped onto the bulge and pulled out the parasite using forceps.

It's relatively harmless for humans.

.

Dirofilaria repens is a filarial nematode that affects dogs and other carnivores. In people, it usually causes lumps under the skin, like this woman in Russian Federation reported.

Humans are aberrant hosts for, which means that our bodies do not normally host the parasite and don't give it ideal conditions for it to mature.

The lead author of the report in NEJM, Vladimir Kartashev, an infectious disease expert at Rostov State Medical University in Rostov-na-Donu, Russia, told The Washington Post in an email that D. repens is an "emerging disease" in the western part of the former Soviet Union and certain parts of Europe.

To avoid mosquito bites wherever you are, the CDC recommends wearing insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and trousers when outdoors, and using screens or nets in the home.
