Nuts like almonds increases sperm count, claims study

Nuts like almonds increases sperm count, claims study

The results were consistent with sperm improvement observed in other studies that looked at diets rich in omega-3, antioxidants such as vitamin C and E, selenium and zinc, and folate.

"We can't yet say that", Dr. Albert Salas-Huetos from the Human Nutrition Unit of the Universitat Rovira i Virgil in Reus, Spain said, "based exclusively on the results of this study". The decline has been linked to factors including pollution, smoking, and unhealthy aspects of the Western-style diet, the study authors said. One of the groups was given a usual western style diet along with 60 grams per day of mixed nuts (almonds, hazel nuts and walnuts) and the other group ate regular western style diet without the nuts.

Sperm counts in men have more than halved over the past 40 years, a trend that has led to a raft of scientific investigations into the possible causes.

Researchers at Rovira and Virgili University in Reus, Spain, conducted a study on 119 healthy men, aged 18 to 35, and divided them into two groups.

Researchers say the findings "support a beneficial role for chronic nut consumption in sperm quality" and reflect the value of further male-specific dietary recommendations.

This simple addition to the diet can significantly improve the quality and volume of sperm cells, as well as their motility.

After 14 weeks the men supplementing their diets with nuts were found to display 16 percent better sperm counts and 6 percent better sperm motility when compared to the control group. At the molecular level it has also been proposed that the genetic integrity of each sperm cell is essential for successful fertilisation; if DNA strands in the cell become damaged or fragmented, they will be unable or less likely to fertilise an egg and maintain embryonic development. Moreover, the subjects in the nut group also showed a significant reduction in their levels of sperm DNA fragmentation, a parameter closely associated with male infertility.

Dr Salas-Huetos added: "We can't yet say that, based exclusively on the results of this study". "But evidence is accumulating in the literature that healthy lifestyle changes such as following a healthy dietary pattern might help conception".

Sperm counts have halved in the western world over the past four decades, which, alongside rising testicular tumours, could be behind plummeting fertility rates and couples' increasing dependency on IVF, according to Professor Niels Skakkebaek from the University of Copenhagen.
