Johns Hopkins Evacuates Two Lab Buildings After Release Of Tuberculosis Research Sample

Johns Hopkins Evacuates Two Lab Buildings After Release Of Tuberculosis Research Sample

Both buildings were evacuated, and employees who were in the area when the incident occurred have been isolated and will be evaluated by the Fire Department, Hoppe said.

WMAR reports that a hazmat investigation is underway after tuberculosis was reportedly released into two Johns Hopkins cancer centers. The release triggered a heavy emergency response outside the complex of Johns Hopkins hospital buildings, including the shutdown of the two used for cancer research. The hospital staffs said that a tiny quantity of the germ accidentally released into its facilities during transportation.

An investigation is underway after people may have been exposed to Tuberculosis at Johns Hopkins, according to the hospital.

Fire officials confirmed the hazmat situation began around 12:22 p.m. People were evacuated from both cancer research buildings as a precaution, while hazmat crews suited up to go inside and contain the contamination.

Baltimore City health officials have arrived at the location.

"In fact, we have determined that there is actually no risk, zero risk to anybody involved".

"Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects your lungs". It's possible to be infected with TB without getting ill, in which case it can still be spread. Patients also experience pain in the chest and even may see blood in the cough.

The building's air circulation systems were shut down shortly after the sample exposure to prevent the airborne disease from spreading, effectively isolating it.

Willis said while this was a one-time event, a review of procedures will take place. Because of its knack for picking on the immunocompromised, TB is much more risky and occasionally fatal for people who also have HIV. If the person is not treated properly then the disease can be fatal.
