'Tiny' Hurricane Beryl strengthens; another storm may develop off NC coast

'Tiny' Hurricane Beryl strengthens; another storm may develop off NC coast

The second Tropical Depression of the Atlantic Hurricane season formed Thursday morning.

At 5 p.m. the centre of Tropical Storm Beryl was located near latitude 10.3 North, longitude 42.8 West. Beryl is moving toward the west near 16 miles per hour (26 km/h).

Maximum sustained winds remain near 35 miles per hour with higher gusts.

However, upper-level winds are expected to become less conducive for development by the weekend, when the system approaches the Lesser Antilles.

The storm could strengthen and become a named storm: Tropical Storm Beryl, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

"Places like the Lesser Antilles watch out because you could feel the effect of this by the weekend".

"The estimated minimum central pressure is 1009 mb [29.80 inches]". These shearing winds should weaken this system as it is reaching the Lesser Antilles.

The system may move slowly up the coast, or, depending on the strength of a cold front crossing the state Friday night and Saturday, could stall and strengthen off the southeast North Carolina coast.

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area.

The Caribbean should see fewer storms, and the chance of a major hurricane hitting the region is significantly less than it was when the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season began.

Beryl will continue to track westward through an environment of warm water and low wind shear which is favorable for additional strengthening.

The barrelling tropical storm caused more than £37million ($50million) in damage and claimed 12 lives as it moved up the USA coast in May.

Forecasters have been watching the compact storm and expected it to intensify.

The team also lowered its forecast of major hurricanes - Category 3 and above - from three to one and decreased the probability of a direct hit on the US coast from a major hurricane from 63 percent to 39 percent.
