U.S. Border Patrol reportedly stops Canadian vessels in disputed waters

U.S. Border Patrol reportedly stops Canadian vessels in disputed waters

Statistics show more migrants are heading out of the United States for Canada rather than the other way around, however.

"Is this overkill? Absolutely". The Grand Manan Fishermen's Association later confirmed that several such interactions occurred in June, NBC reports. "It's quite disturbing when you have fishermen on the water, doing their job, providing for their families ... and they're being harassed". "Canadian fishermen are being harassed by USA border patrol. As far as I'm concerned, it needs to stop immediately".

"Customs and Border Protection seems engaged in such a wide variety of troublesome practices, and they are not particularly forthcoming about what they are doing and why they are doing it, which is troubling", Heiden added. "Why wait until it becomes something uglier?"

In a statement, the Association believes this was part of a regular exercise conducted by officials.

The group said it's working with the Canadian government to ensure their members can continue to use the fishery in a "normal manner", noting that they have previously enjoyed a "respectful and cordial" relationship with their American counterparts.

"There's been a bit of a misunderstanding there somewhere", Cook said.

After American fishermen came forward to say that their boats were also being intercepted by border patrol agents, the association said in a statement that they understood the incidents to be "part of a regular exercise being conducted along the U.S. marine border". They declined to specify how many of these were fishing vessels.

"That wasn't coincidence", Cook said.

Stephen Kelly, a research scholar at Duke University in Durham, N.C., said neither country accepts that there is a Grey Zone and that "it's created more tension in the area over the last decade".

Visitors head to Machias Seal Island on Friday, June 24, 2016. He was stopped two weeks ago in Cutler Harbor and asked for his identification, and his son has been stopped and boarded about six miles offshore, Drouin said.

Cook told the National Post in an interview Wednesday that at least 10 Canadian fishing boats have been intercepted by the U.S. Border Patrol in the disputed area in the past two weeks and that some of them have even been boarded by agents looking for undocumented immigrants.

Brown could not be reached for comment.

Global Affairs confirmed that Canada is looking into "these incidents that occurred in Canadian waters, including through engaging with U.S. agencies involved in the matter".

The Canadian Foreign Ministry said it had launched an inquiry into the incident off Machias Seal Island, which Canada insists is its territory.

US Customs and Border Protection said Thursday agents whose sector covers the area have interviewed workers on 21 Canadian vessels this fiscal year while conducting regular patrols to enforce immigration laws.

Cook said that he heard from boat captains that the Border Patrol had searched at least two Canadian vessels in June. "The last thing Canada wants is for Donald Trump to seize on this as an example of US sovereignty being challenged", Kelly explained.

Indeed, it's not for nothing the area is called the grey zone - gray zone to the Americans.

With America putting its focus on strengthing the borders, Canada and Machias Seal Island are now being monitored.

For hundreds of years, lobstermen in the United States have sailed the chilly waters off New England during the summer, lowering and raising traps along the ocean floor.
