Liverpool in talks to sign Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool in talks to sign Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool are pushing to close the signing of Stoke City attacker Xherdan Shaqiri before they leave for their preseason tour overseas.

Shaqiri has made no secret of his desire to leave the Potters following their relegation from the Premier League, with Liverpool quickly emerging as the favourites for his signature.

Shaqiri does have a release clause but the exact details are unknown at this stage, though the fee is believed to be higher than the widely reported £12m.

Shaqiri joined Stoke in 2015 from Inter Milan before going on to make 84 league appearances for the club.

The Echo reports that Shaqiri would prefer a move to Liverpool and Stoke are hopeful that selling the Swiss worldwide to the Reds would mean they would be more willing to loan out one of Harry Wilson and Sheyi Ojo.

Liverpool have already strengthened their squad this summer with the £39m signing of Monaco midfielder Fabinho and the arrival of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig.

The diminutive winger enjoyed a mixed World Cup; one that was peppered with moments of footballing brilliance and political controversy as Switzerland reached the last sixteen of the tournament, eventually losing out to Sweden. A deal for the Lyon captain may yet be resurrected after France's World Cup campaign, however.
