Slew of resignations in United Kingdom 'a good week for Brexit' - Simon Coveney

Slew of resignations in United Kingdom 'a good week for Brexit' - Simon Coveney

The British leader may have quelled talk of a leadership challenge, but some Conservative Brexit supporters are still incensed over what they see as her breach of a promise of a clean break with the EU.

Writing in The Sun, arch-Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg denounced the Chequers deal as "a dud" which "will not deliver Brexit".

He said: "I accept the principle that if you want the right deal with the European Union and we do that that is going to involve preferential treatment for European Union citizens".

And he warned: "A government that depends upon the opposition to get its business through is like the gingerbread man on the back of the fox crossing the river".

Her idea of keeping Britain aligned with the European Union through a "free trade zone" prompted Brexit secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to quit.

"Hopefully we will resist very strongly any attempt to get any further concessions from us on this, because I think this goes further than we should have gone already", he said yesterday.

He said Brexiteers need to accept that pursuing a hard Brexit would likely fail to clear the Commons, risk thousands of job losses and threaten peace in Northern Ireland.

But leading Eurosceptic Bernard Jenkin played down the prospects of more walkouts from Mrs May's administration. We as the 27 under the leadership of Jean-Claude Juncker and Michel Barnier, will then form an opinion and later on table a common response to those proposals. "We are supporting Theresa for PM".

Being a "romantic on this issue" was "an indulgence not a policy", he told colleagues.

He said: "When it comes to a vote sometime around the end of this year, let us say that Theresa May has done a deal that bears some resemblance to what was put forward at Chequers with the EU".

May's personal authority was badly damaged after she called a snap election a year ago to strengthen her hand in Brexit talks but instead she lost her parliamentary majority, meaning she has to rely on a small Northern Irish party to govern.

"The housing association sector now desperately needs a period of stability if we are to properly assist the Government in tackling the national housing crisis".

In a blow to the British government, Davis quit late Sunday, saying he could not support Prime Minister Theresa May's plan for close trade and regulatory ties with the European Union after Brexit next year.

Michael Gove left no doubt that he would not follow Boris Johnson and David Davis out of the Cabinet, declaring that he backed the Prime Minister's plans "100%". Gauke said. "The challenge is all very well for people to say I wouldn't do this".

Meanwhile prominent Eurosceptic Sir Bill Cash said he was "deeply disappointed" with the Chequers deal, which he said raised concerns that the United Kingdom would not get "a proper Brexit". But since the former foreign secretary might now find himself rather underemployed, we could always send him for physical re-education to an offshore labour colony. Last night Downing Street declined to comment. Kat Malthouse, a work and pensions minister, replaced Dominic Raab as housing minister and Chris Heaton-Harris became a junior minister at the Brexit department, replacing Steve Baker.

On Tuesday, the president described Johnson as a "friend" who had been "very nice to me, very supportive", even though when Trump suggested in 2015 London had police no-go zones, Johnson, then the capital's mayor, quipped he feared going to NY because of "the real risk of meeting Donald Trump".
