After 66 Years of Growing, Longest Fingernails Are Cut

His cut fingernails are laid flat in a memorial case and span a length of over 31 feet, the height of a three-story building, according to a statement by Ripley's.

Chillal started growing his nails when he was just 14, after being scolded for breaking a teacher's nail.

Shridhar Chillal, 82, finally got his fingernails cut after 66 years of growing them out. The Ripley's Believe It or Not museum in Times Square hosted a "nail clipping ceremony" on Wednesday where Chillal's nails were cut and preserved for an exhibition.

Shridhar Chillal, an octogenarian with the world's longest fingernails measuring over 9 metres, finally cut his coiled appendages after 66 years at a ceremony in NY.

"When I chose to cut my nails, it was hard for me to make this decision", he said.

Shridhar Chillal, the 66-year-old Indian man with nails as long as a London bus, has finally had them chopped off.

He only grew the nails on his left hand. Chillal has said that his nails were so fragile that he has to be very careful not to break them while sleeping: "I can't move much, so every half an hour or so I wake up and move my hand to the other side of the bed". The world record holder suffered several difficulties due to the extraordinarily long nails that he had grown over the years.

But he chose to cut away an important part of his life earlier this week when he flew to NY to have the nails removed by a doctor.

Chillal, 82, has not cut the fingernails on his left hand since 1952 and has the longest fingernails in the world.

He said decades of dealing with the weight of his nails has left his hand permanently unable to open or move his fingers. Museum in Times Square, where Chillal's severed talons will be put on display to the public. "While he may have cut his fingernails, his nails will be forever memorialized inside Ripley's Believe It or Not!".
