Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen found himself in hot-water Thursday among America's courageous service men and women; bizarrely saying anti-Trump FBI agent Peter Strzok deserves a Purple Heart over his escalating scandal.
Strzok also said he was one of the few people during the 2016 US election who knew the details of Russian election interference and its possible connections with people in the Trump orbit, and that information could have derailed Trump's election chances.
"Not once in my 26 years of defending my nation did my personal opinions impact any official action I took", Strzok said in testimony before a joint hearing Thursday of the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform Committees. This included questions about the text messages he exchanged with FBI attorney Lisa Page that raised concerns of political bias in the investigations of Hillary Clinton's emails and Trump campaign ties to Russian efforts to interfere with the 2016 election.
What was the legal basis for an investigation of a presidential campaign?
Strzok worked on FBI investigations into both Clinton's use of an email server and potential co-ordination between Russian Federation and Trump's campaign.
Strzok said he could not answer any questions about the ongoing investigation based on advice from the FBI's general counsel. In addition, it's a stretch to say that merely providing the number of witnesses Strzok interviewed when the FBI was still running the Russian Federation investigation in any way compromises the Mueller investigation.
"The more information we acquire, the more interviews we conduct, and the more sources we contact, the more we learn", he said.
Gohmert said Inspector General Michael Horowitz delineated "500 pages of bias" from Strzok and others, and then "threw a bone to the Democrats" by declaring that there was no inherent bias that affected the outcome of the Clinton investigation.
Strzok said on Thursday that "we" referred to the American people because he believed Trump would not win the election after criticizing families whose relatives have been killed while serving in the USA military. "That is why we're here and why this matter".
At this point, Gohmert cut back in, and the two spoke loudly over one another.
Appearing on MSNBC, former CIA Director John Brennan expressed his disgust with a Republican-led grilling of Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok, calling it "mockery of the oversight function", adding "Vladimir Putin must be very happy".
Khan said Hillary Clinton, by contrast, "called [his] son the best of America".
Shortly thereafter, Rhode Island Democratic Rep. David Cicilline shouted that a "point of order" was necessary, and demanded Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) force Gohmert to retract his accusations against Strzok. Strzok, a seasoned counterintelligence agent, helped lead both investigations but has since been reassigned to human resources.
The White House said President Trump is monitoring the hearing from Europe.
You don't have to like Peter Strzok, or James Comey, or Robert Mueller, or anyone else involved in these various investigations. "My personal opinions in no way-" Strzok said, before he was interrupted.
Page told investigators that she and Strzok were having an affair, according to a Justice Department Inspector General's report about the Clinton email investigation, and that they used their work devices to hide that from their spouses.
Jeffress accused the panels of using unnecessary "bullying tactics" to push Page into an interview immediately, especially when "she has offered to voluntarily appear before the committees later this month".
