Dominic Raab hails Brexit plans as practical way forward

Dominic Raab hails Brexit plans as practical way forward

"We're making sure we've got a bespoke relationship with the EU", Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, who was only appointed on Monday after his predecessor David Davis quit in protest over the plan, told BBC radio.

In response, May said she was looking forward to meeting Trump when he arrives on Thursday: "We'll be talking positively about how we can continue to work together in our special relationship".

"As a effect there will be no business as usual because of the Brexit".

Mr Raab, May's new Brexit minister, will suggest that such criticism was not justified.

Soon after his appointment, Hunt said he would be standing "four square" behind the prime minister "so that we can get through an agreement with the European Union based on what was agreed by the Cabinet last week at Chequers".

Johnson, who wrote in his resignation letter that the Brexit "dream is dying" and that Britain was headed for the "status of colony" under May s leadership, is seen as a potential challenger.

Pressure had been growing for months on the prime minister to reach a compromise on Brexit within her publicly divided cabinet in order to progress talks with the EU. Both fiercely criticized her negotiating stance.

Speaking at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Mrs May repeated her assertion that the Chequers agreement delivered on her Brexit red lines - leaving the EU's single market and customs union.

Mr Coveney said that hard negotiations lay ahead but that the Brexit process has moved from the "politics of parliaments" to the negotiating rooms of Brussels. "Nice try", she said while adding, "But I'm getting on with delivering what the British people want".

The British leader may have stilled the waters over a possible leadership contest, but some Conservative Brexit supporters are still incensed over what they see as her decision to break her promise for a clean break with the EU.

Anti-Corbyn MPs are likely to be annoyed by Davis and Johnson jumping ship, with many concerned it now leaves the door wide open for the Labour leader.

"It is the ultimate betrayal of our democracy and people's belief in it".

"Mrs May has recognised that the only pragmatic approach to decoupling from the European Union is a softer version of Brexit", the Financial Times said in an editorial.

Davis" late substitution with Dominic Raab - a hard-line Brexiteer - has clearly failed to calm a team revolt against their manager; and penalties look increasingly more likely for the United Kingdom in its Brexit negotiations.' Concludes David: "To be honest, we're now more confident of football coming home than a great deal for United Kingdom exporters and importers concluding our Brexit negotiations. But within 48 hours Davis had quit and Johnson followed.

Mr. Trump praised Johnson, who resigned this week as Foreign Secretary largely due to disagreements with May over Brexit, even as resignations from Johnson and another top British official this week fuel speculation over the possibility of May's ouster. But Britain said European Union nationals should be able to travel visa-free to Britain for tourism or "temporary business", and there should be measures allowing young people and students to work and study in Britain.

The Sun, Britain's biggest-selling newspaper, which has long argued for Brexit, said May had made "blunder after blunder".

Many pro-Brexit lawmakers are furious at a plan they say will stop Britain forging an independent economic course. They've said it must be one or the other, and that a deep and frictionless free-trade arrangement must be bundled with the single market's free movement of people.
