Officer resigns amid uproar over lack of response to woman's harassment

The Puerto Rican T-shirt controversy at a birthday celebration has resulted in the resignation of a police officer who refused to intervene as a man repeatedly harassed a young woman for wearing a shirt of the Puerto Rican flag. In the video, Irizarry is approached by a man, identified by authorities as 62-year-old Timothy Trybus, who tells her she should not be wearing the Puerto Rican flag shirt in the US, and asks "Are you a citizen?"

"After a review of the case, we approved felony hate crimes charges", said Robert Foley, spokesman for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.

Timothy Trybus, 62, originally faced misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct charges for the incident where he angrily confronted the woman and told her she "shouldn't be wearing that" - referring to the shirt. She posted the video to Facebook.

'If she's an American citizen, why is she wearing that s**t?' Trybus shouts.

"I have full faith in our system and the process and the investigation that is going underway", Arroyo said.

"I do not feel comfortable with him here, is there anything you can do?" "You should not be wearing that in the United States of America". The officer is seen walking away.

The Forest Preserves confirmed they launched an investigation into the response of the officer, with Connor assigned to desk duty pending the outcome. As of Thursday morning, the video had be seen 1.5 million times.

My wife and I wanted to let her know that we support her and we admire her.

I showed my official ID as a Member of Congress, to which the officer said, "I don't think so", indicating that she thought my ID was a fake and that I couldn't possibly be a Member of Congress.

PHOTO: A then-unidenfied man, pictured, was shown harassing the woman, questioning her citizenship.

Mr Trybus continued to harangue Ms Irizarry for about 10 minutes before other officers arrived and arrested him. They also said that more officers responded and arrested Trybus when the first officer asked for assistance on the radio. Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in United States presidential primaries, but not in presidential elections.

Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory since 1899.

On Twitter, he said: "We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background".
