SCOTUS Nominee Kavanaugh on Gun Control & the 2nd Amendment

SCOTUS Nominee Kavanaugh on Gun Control & the 2nd Amendment

Opponents of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Wednesday unveiled a new line of attack - questioning whether Kavanaugh, as a clerk to 9th U.S. Circuit Court Judge Alex Kozinski in the early 1990s, knew about Kozinski's alleged sexual harassment of fellow clerks. The panel will launch confirmation hearings later this summer.

"This could be the presidency with the most Supreme Court picks of any presidency in history", Trump said during an appearance in Virginia more than a year before becoming president. There'll be the usual attempts to sully his reputation not only in the Senate but outside of the Senate, but ... Aides say it could take weeks to assemble those materials.

Kavanaugh's opinion on controversial cases, such as abortion, are less known.

Still, Democrats are pointing to that case as a red flag as Congress considers elevating Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. They see that as concerning amid the ongoing special counsel probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

"The American people should have their eyes wide open to these stakes", said Sen.

Whether or not their opposition was predetermined, the Democratic leadership in the Senate is ready to stand beside the Women's March in the effort to block Kavanaugh.

In his 2006 Senate confirmation hearing to become a federal judge, Kavanaugh appeared to support the legal precedent set by the Roe decisions.

"We are concerned that Judge Kavanaugh's judicial record does not reflect the demonstrated independence and commitment to fair treatment for all that is necessary to merit a seat on our nation's highest court", Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL's CEO and national director, said in a statement.

He also hopes Democrats will unite to "put pressure on the Republican moderates" and salvage the "future of the Supreme Court for the next 40 years".

Cornyn acknowledged Trump's choice of the judge was "a little bit of a calculated risk. because Judge Kavanaugh has the longest paper trail" of any potential nominee.

Yet despite his conservative track record, it's unlikely that the seating of Kavanaugh would create a dramatic rightward shift in the court when it comes to labor law.

The 25.6 million figure cited by Nielsen covers viewers who watched Fox News, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, Fox and CNN during Mr. Trump's announcement Monday, and excludes smaller networks and other formats.

Because Republicans hold a slim majority, 51-49, narrowed further by the absence of GOP Sen.

In the hours after the Republican president tapped the conservative jurist, Democrats struggled to unify behind a clear and coherent message to combat the nomination, which could shift the court to the right for decades.

Their unusual strategy, according to multiple senior Democratic strategists, is to apply as much pressure as possible on two moderate Republican senators - Susan Collins of ME and Alaska's Lisa Murkowski - as a way to not only possibly sink the nomination but to keep vulnerable red-state Democrats from supporting the nominee. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., and Joe Donnelly, D-Ind.

All three voted for Trump's first Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch.

The mistake played into concerns among conservatives that Democrats planned to blindly oppose anyone Trump might choose to nominate.

"Let's put it this way: There were some who have been on the list that I would have had a very, very hard time supporting, just based on what was already publicly known about them", Murkowski told Politico.

Collins, from ME, and Alaska's Murkowski are two genuine mavericks in the Republican Party, and all eyes have turned to them. "[Republicans'] new strategy is to use the court system to invalidate the protections in the law for people with pre-existing conditions", Murphy said.
